LANSING, MI. – The snow-covered pathways of the Forest Akers East Golf Course did not slow down some of the nation’s top athletes, competing in the NCAA Division III cross-country national championships. The Hyvion team managed to keep up with runners, however, providing critical aerial shots of each race from start to finish.
Olivet College played host to the event, setting the stage for both men’s individual and team 8,000-meter races and women’s individual and team 6,000-meter races. Frigid air temperatures, combined with strong winds and a snowy landscape, created a difficult course for runners. Simultaneously, the conditions provided Hyvion’s team with picturesque film shots that showcase the participant’s intensity, determination, and skill level.
During the Women’s National Championship, John Hopkins University made a comeback effort in the final 1,000 meters to earn back-to-back national team titles. History was made in the Men’s National Championship, as MIT captured not only its first national title in cross-country but also the university’s first-ever NCAA team championship win.
Every moment was captured by Hyvion’s team of camera operators and drone-flight crews. The company was able to activate a local crew thanks, in part, to its educational partnership with Central Michigan University. The on-site team was led by Hyvion UAS Specialist Brady Robertson.
Robertson also took the lead in coverage during the October cross-country championship for the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC). As the fourth-oldest collegiate conference in the United States, the MVC is home to more than a dozen Division I schools in Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Conditions at the Lavern Gibson Cross-Country Course in Terre Haute, Indiana, proved to be better for runners. Ultimately, Bradley University emerged victorious in both the women's and men’s championships, sweeping the board by more than 20 points.
